CRANBURY, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#PCOC19The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®), the leading multimedia peer-reviewed journal dedicated to issues in managed care, presented Inmaculada Hernandez, Pharm.D., Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, with the 2019 Seema S. Sonnad Emerging Leader in Managed Care Research Award during the Patient-Centered Oncology Care® (PCOC) meeting on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia.

“As an exemplary leader in the field of managed care, Dr. Hernandez sincerely represents the values that the Seema S. Sonnad Emerging Leader in Managed Care Research Award was founded on,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences™, parent company of AJMC®. “We are proud to recognize amazing, dynamic and well-versed professionals like Dr. Hernandez who are making great contributions to the field.”

In 2016, Hernandez joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, where she serves as an assistant professor of pharmacy and therapeutics and as associate director of the Center for Pharmaceutical Policy and Prescribing. She also serves as associate editor for the journal BMC Cardiovascular Disorders. Hernandez’s research program is focused on the intersection of pharmaceutical health services and outcomes research, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics and pharmaceutical policy.

With over 40 published peer-reviewed manuscripts, Hernandez has contributed to 25 as a first author and eight as a senior author. These articles have been published in medical journals including AJMC®, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Oncology, Health Affairs, and Stroke, and their findings have been featured on NPR, Forbes, ABC, CNBC, BBC, Fox News and Bloomberg. Hernandez was recently included on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list as a young leader in health care research.

“Dr. Hernandez exemplifies dedication to advancing research that addresses pharmaceutical issues that are extremely important to managed care,” said C. Bernie Good, M.D., MPH, Senior Medical Director, Value-Based Pharmacy Initiatives at UPMC Health Plan. “In particular, she has used innovative methods to understand drug price trends and has become a nationally recognized expert in this area. To achieve this status at an early stage in her academic career is truly remarkable.”

This award was established in honor of Seema S. Sonnad, PhD, the former associate editor for AJMC®, who died in June 2015. Sonnad served as a mentor to many young researchers and was an advocate for the creation of an award that recognizes and encourages early career achievements in the field of managed care.
