LC GC® Announces the 2020 Winners of the Lifetime Achievement and Emerging Leader in Chromatography Awards

Daniel W. Armstrong and Szabolcs Fekete will be honored at the Pittcon 2020 conference.

CRANBURY, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#pittconLC GC®, a leading multimedia platform of peer-reviewed technical information on the field of chromatography and the separation sciences, has named Daniel W. Armstrong and Szabolcs Fekete the winners of the 13thth Annual LC GC® Lifetime Achievement and Emerging Leader in Chromatography Awards. The winners will be honored in a symposium as part of the technical program at the Pittcon 2020 conference in Chicago, Illinois, on March 3, 2020.

“We are proud to recognize each of these individuals for their outstanding success in the field of chromatography,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., the president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences™, parent company of LC GC®. “Armstrong has accomplished an incredible amount throughout his career, and Fekete is on his way to being one of the premier experts in chromatography.”

The Lifetime Achievement in Chromatography Award honors an outstanding professional for a lifetime of contributions to the advancement of chromatographic techniques and applications.

Armstrong, the winner of the 2020 award, is the Robert A. Welch Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Arlington. Among Armstrong’s greatest contributions is his work in enantiomeric separations. His seminal publication in 1986 indicated the necessity of enantiomeric separations for pharmaceuticals and provided impetus that led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue new guidelines in 1992 for the development of stereoisomeric drugs. Another one of his contributions is the development of comprehensive solvation and characterization models for room-temperature ionic liquids as stationary phases in gas chromatography. Armstrong’s impact in the field of chromatography results not only from his research, but also from the over 175 former graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scientists who have studied and trained under his guidance and went on to influence academia in six countries and throughout pharmaceutical companies worldwide.

The Emerging Leader in Chromatography Award recognizes the achievements and aspirations of a talented young separation scientist who has made strides early in his or her career toward the advancement of chromatographic techniques and applications.

Fekete, the 2020 award winner, is a scientific collaborator at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He mostly focuses on new possibilities in protein chromatography. In one of his studies, Fekete was among the firsts to determine the impact of operating pressure and heat effects on proteins’ retention and selectivity in reversed-phase liquid chromatography. He has also published valuable work on the retention modeling of large proteins (monoclonal antibodies and related products) using computer simulation and suggesting a generic method development approach along with platform methods that are very important for pharmaceutical industrial laboratories. To date, Fekete has contributed to more than 130 journal articles and given more than 60 oral and 30 poster presentations at scientific conferences.
