Kit Check and Sandoz Agree to a Commercialization Collaboration That Helps Improve Hospital Medication Administration Safety

Implementation of Kit Check RFID technology enables accuracy and visibility of hospital medications, from the production line to the patient

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Kit Check, the leader in automated medication management solutions for hospitals, along with Sandoz, a Novartis division, today announced a commercialization and supply chain agreement that will allow Sandoz generic injectable products to operate out of the box in any Kit Check customer site without any additional labor.

Tagging pharmaceutical products with RFID helps improve patient safety by enabling more accurate tracking and authentication of medication through the entire supply chain, with the goal of reducing error rates to zero. With no added costs and with minimal impact to a company’s line, speed, and yield, customers can ensure that the tag in the label is U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) approved and will work every time at their hospital. The solution provides upstream visibility for hospital pharmacies, ensuring that the right drug is in the right place, at the right time, for the right patient.

“Sandoz prides itself on leading the industry in innovation, seeking out the latest solutions to provide better quality and improve patient outcomes,” says Carol Lynch, President of Sandoz Inc. “We are proud to work with Kit Check to help ensure performance, reliability, and data integrity for medication at every step.”

Kit Check’s RFID-based medication inventory tracking and automated tray processing is currently in use at more than 500 hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. Kit Check and Sandoz will provide a complete solution for manufacturers and contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) that want to implement RFID tagging in facilities that package drugs at high speeds, in line with the cGMP, and for hospitals looking for end-to-end inventory tracking. By implementing cGMP processes, Kit Check is able to manage the entire installation and certification process from plan development to final line testing.

“This agreement with Sandoz is a significant step forward, reinforcing our long-term commitment to give customers visibility throughout the care continuum. Also, this collaboration will bring improvements for hospital pharmacists, by developing solutions that streamline operations, reduce risk and free up time for clinical work, which means better efficiency and safety for both pharmacists and patients,” said Kevin MacDonald, CEO and co-founder of Kit Check.

Sandoz is the latest company to be recognized with the “Works with Kit Check” certification – which is a mark of trust and compatibility with Kit Check and other leading automation vendors (carousels and ADMs). The program connects all elements in the pharmaceutical ecosystem that touch a product and make them smarter. For Instance, scanners will automatically identify the syringes in terms of NDC, lot number, and expiration date, saving time for hospital staff and reducing the risk of medical error. As a result, the pharmacy can see the product’s journey from the plant to the point of administration in real time.
