BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–2020 On-site, a Boston-based mobile optometry company whose mission is to expand access to high-quality vision care including clinical research, has completed its observational study to assess the quality of subjective refraction, autorefraction, and keratometry measurements in a mobile eye setting. The study, which was completed during a month-long period, found there is no statistically significant difference between data retrieved in the mobile vision clinic setting as compared to data retrieved through an in-office exam.
The study consisted of 20 subjects ages 18 through 60 who received eye examinations in both an office setting and onboard the mobile vision clinic within a 30-minute period. In each testing location, patients were given autorefraction, keratometry, and subjective refraction testing, allowing investigators to collect 10 different data points on 40 unique eyes. Over 400 pieces of data were obtained for comparative analysis.
“This study tells us that mobile eye evaluations produce results that are just as accurate as an in-office examination,” says Dr. Debi Sarma, OD, 2020 On-site optometrist and principal investigator.
This validation of mobile optometry as a delivery system for reliable, repeatable, and accurate eye care benefits patients across the country who need specialty vision services closer to home, either routinely or in clinical research settings.
“The implications of this study are significant. Mobile vision clinics have the ability to travel great distances to provide care. Terrain, altitude, temperature, and road conditions are all considerations when appropriately managing the optometric equipment on board,” Dr. Sarma adds. “This study not only highlights the caliber of the machines on the mobile clinics, but also the years of experience and innovation it takes to obtain high-quality data as we provide care across the country.”
Each of 2020 On-site’s mobile vision clinics travel almost 20,000 miles per year, seeing between 500 and 700 patients per month. The results from this study enhance the company’s mission to improve access to high-quality eye exams for individuals living in geographically disparate areas in need of equitable care.
